ACCIDENT & INCIDENT INVESTIGATIONS
"All accidents provide us with knowledge to prevent another"
What is the difference between accidents and incidents?
Incidents represent situations which have the potential to cause harm to a person or damage equipment or property and are often referred to as “Near Misses”
Accidents are incidents which occur and result in harm to a person or damage to equipment or property.
Reasons to investigate a workplace accident include:
to find out the cause of accidents and to prevent similar accidents in the future
to fulfill any legal requirements
to determine the cost of an accident
to process workers' compensation claims
to determine compliance with applicable safety regulations
Incidents that involve no injury or property damage should still be investigated to determine the hazards that should be corrected. The same principles apply to a quick inquiry of a minor incident and to the more formal investigation of a serious event.
Over the years we have investigated many accidents and incidents by using sound and structured investigation processes that have identified the root cause and the associated contributing factors. This process of investigation confirmed the corrective actions that had to be established and implemented to prevent a repeat incident.
